Tardy and Absence Policies

Tardy Students

Your child will be tardy if he or she enters the building after 7:40am.  Children are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings at that time.  Remember — a referral to the Truancy Office may be made if your child has too many tardies.

The Haun gym opens at 7am as a convenience for parents whose child(ren) need to be dropped off early.  At 7:20am, the front doors open and students can go to their classrooms.  Instructional time begins at 7:40am.

Tardies are considered “parts of days” and are generally considered unexcused absences except for doctor or dentist appointments.  Referrals to the Truancy Office occur when a student has acquired ten (10) or more unexcused days or parts of days in a six-month period, or three (3) or more unexcused days or parts of days in a four-week period, per Texas Education Code 25.093.

Doctor and Dentist Appointments

If your child will be late to school because of a doctor or dentist appointment:

  • Call the ChildSafe Line at (469) 752-1600, ext. 3 to report your child's absence.
  • When your child returns to school, send a note from the doctor or dentist's office to the Front Office so that the recorded tardy or absence can be voided.  If this note is not received within 3 days of your child's return to school, a referral to the Truancy Office per Texas Education Code 25.093 could be made.

Excused Absences

If your child is absent from school for illness or any other excused reason:

  • Please call the ChildSafe Line, (469) 752-1600, ext. 3, to report your child's absence EVERY day of his or her absence.
  • When you child returns to school, send in a note describing the reason for your child's absence (including the child's name and date(s) of absence).  This note must be provided to the Front Office within three days of your child's return to school or the absence will remain unexcused and could lead to a referral to the Truancy Office per Texas Education Code 25.093.

Absence for Religious Holiday

If your student will be absent from school due to observance of a religious holiday, you have two options for making sure the absence is marked excused:

  • Provide the Haun Front Office with a written note that includes your child's name and the date he or she will be absent.
  • Complete a Student Absence Request Form before the holiday.
